At Highlands Candle Company, we hand-craft each candle with thoughtfully balanced wax blends and premium fragrance oils designed to deliver long-lasting glow and true aromatic depth. To help you get the most out of every candle, here’s how to care for your candle from the first light to the last flicker.

Candle Care

1. First Burn Matters

For the very first time you light your candle, let the wax melt fully edge-to-edge — don’t blow it out too soon. This creates a full wax pool that prevents “memory rings” (when wax only melts in the center), which causes uneven burning and wax tunneling later.  Tip: A melt pool generally forms within 2–4 hours, depending on candle size.

2. Trim the Wick Before Every Burn

Before every lighting, trim your wick to about ¼ inch.

This helps:

  • Keep the flame controlled and steady

  • Minimize smoke and soot

  • Prevent the wick from burning too hot or mushrooming

  • Allow your candle to burn longer and cleaner

Use a wick trimmer or scissors and remove any excess trimmings from the wax surface.

3. Burn in Ideal Sessions

To maximize life and performance:

  • Burn your candle in 3–4 hour sessions

  • Avoid burning more than 4–6 hours at a stretch

Longer burns can overheat the wax and wick, reducing fragrance life and creating uneven melting.

4. Avoid Drafts & Extreme Conditions

Place your candle: Away from fans, open windows, vents, or air conditioners and on a stable, heat-resistant surface. Drafts can lead to uneven burns, flickering flames, soot, and loss of fragrance performance.

5. Let It Cool Fully Between Uses

After extinguishing, allow the candle to cool and solidify completely before relighting to protect wax integrity, wick performance, and scent throw.

6. Know When to Stop

When about ½ inch of wax remains at the bottom of the vessel, it’s time to retire the candle. Burning too close to the bottom risks overheating the glass and may diminish fragrance and performance.

7. Simple Safety Reminders

Candles are warm, open flames — so:

  • Never leave a candle burning unattended

  • Keep away from children and pets

  • Never move a candle while it’s lit or when the wax is still molten

Bonus Candle Care Tips

Extinguishing: Use a candle snuffer — it’s gentler on the wick and reduces smoke.

Clean Wax Pool: After each burn, remove any debris (wick bits, trimmings) so your next burn is pure.

Repurposing Jars: Once your candle is finished, let cool completely, then remove wax and clean the vessel — great for storage or decor.
